Tobacco Valley Country

2004/2005 Visitor's Guide

Border Crossing a Part of Travel Through Area

The International border is a visible part of the Tobacco Valley. Many visitors are Canadians arriving from the north both in summer and winter. Summer is golf season, and winter is time to ski.

Traffic flows north as well, with a good number of American tourists on their way to take in the majestic scenes of British Columbia.

Either way, travelers must pass through the Port of Rooseville and pass muster with customs officials of the respective country, which has become stricter since September 11.  U.S. citizens must show proof of citizenship, a birth certificate or passport and preferably have two photo ID's.

The port is now open 24-hours a day on both sides of the border.

Remember - To cross the border you will need a passport or birth certificate.

Visitor's will find new port facilities completed.

Operations were transferred from the former 1933-built structure in 2003.

Declare anything you've acquired while in Canada, whether you think it’s significant or not. U.S. Port Director Rex Edwards suggests. And keep in mind that regulations on hand guns are very strict. About the only exception is involvement in a pistol match, and even then you must carry the invitation from organizers.  Call (406) 889-3737 if you have questions about crossing the border.

If you’re headed north and are wondering about what you can or cannot take, call Canadian customs at 250-887-3413.

US Customs officials get calls all the time about Canadian regulations, and they have to refer you to the Canadian number anyway.
